04/09/2019 - Congratulations Prof Phyllis Butow!
Congratulations to our very own Prof. Phyllis Butow, who has been awarded the 2019 Payne-Scott Professorial Distinction, commencing in 2020

The scheme celebrates leaders in research and education and those whose work is not only recognised nationally and internationally, but who are helping to develop the careers of others, contribute to educational reform and innovation and play a major role in the University community and in public debate.

Prof. Butow has an outstanding track record of collaborative, scholarly research in healthcare communication and psycho-oncology with more than 560 peer-reviewed publications and in excess of $50 million in grant funding.

She is recognised as an international leader in both fields, and led the foundation of two unique centres within the University of Sydney building on her success:
i) the Centre for Medical Psychology and Evidence-based Decision-making; and,
ii) the Psycho-Oncology Co-operative Research Group.
Prof. Butow's research has changed clinical practice through the development and dissemination by Cancer Australia of 'Psychosocial Guidelines for the Care of People with Cancer'; implementation of Question Prompt Lists in NSW, and of an evidence-based pathway for managing psychological morbidity.

Prof. Butow has supervised and maintained ongoing mentoring relationships with more than 40 higher degree students reflecting her dedication to building the capacity of junior staff and researchers.

During her career Prof Butow has generously served the University of Sydney in a variety of roles, including as a member of the Cancer Research Network Steering Committee, as well as numerous professional bodies including the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia of which she is the immediate past President.  She has been recognised as a Fellow of the Australasian Academy of Social Scientists.
